Interrogations

Interrogations is a type of method used a lot by law enforcement when trying to solve a case. It has been used for many years now in police work. This method is used in order for police to gather information. In some cases police officers doing the interrogation may get carried away when it comes to trying to make the person confess what they did. Some may intimidate them and try to get as much as they can. Doing this the person being interrogated just wants to get out of there as fast as possible, which leads to false confessions being made after being harassed so much by police. It is super depressing the fact that police do certain things just to get what they need to solve a crime.

After reading the Reid Technique article, I had no idea what it was to begin with until I read it.  The Reid Technique is a simple method used when interrogating. It begins with a form of interview called the behavioral analysis. This is basically starts off with asking a series of questions. First you start with basic questions then you ask more complicated ones to make the person think and see how they react to the questions. Then the interviewer leaves the room based on behavior shown in order to tell if they are lying or not from the questions. Then if the interviewer believes suspect is lying they will go in with all the evidence from the case, and give them consequences what will happen to them based on the crime in order to get confession out of suspect.

The problem with the Reid Technique is that I do not like, it basically a technique just to get confession out of the suspect.  The point of interrogating someone is because they have been thought to be a suspect of a crime and they need to tell the story of crime committed in order to see if it matches evidence.  Most people assume since they are being interrogated that they are guilty when they themselves may have nothing to do with crime which leads to false confessions coming from some people maybe to cover up for a person or lie about themselves being a suspect of crime. This technique should focus more on a justice view and trying to help solve the persons involvement in crime or get facts collected in order to catch the proper suspect.

Next, I wanted to talk about the short film, Scaredycat by Blubaugh. In this film it portrayed how memory helps when it come to interrogation or interviewing a certain person. Depending on the persons memory they might remember everything exactly how it happened or they might be frightened with what happened to them and only remember certain things since it bring traumatizing memories. In the film, Blubaugh was brutally attacked one day which had him with fear after it.  He himself did not see who had mugged him but he assumed they were all young black kids. Ever since this event he would move away from all people he thought they all did bad things and he got a certain feeling when he was near a black person ever since his attack so it would make sense for him to do that. But in reality not all the attackers were black. When he finds this out, it shows that one's memory is not 100% right when your in a crazy situation. It is to show that a persons confession is not always accurate when you are interrogating them.

The last article I would like to talk about is False Confession.  This essay made me realize that eyewitnesses are not always reliable when it comes to DNA exoneration's. Not everyone on a crime scene is going to be able to remember what happened or who was involved they could forget certain details that are important. This helps me in my future career to ask many witnesses because not everyone can remember everything. Eyewitnesses can lead to false convictions and confessions made by the person because they might be covering up for a person they know that committed a crime which is wrong and bad since that makes them apart of crime.
